I’m excited to be the guest for Dale Dougherty’s next Fireside Chat as we explore the story behind the updated and revised edition of a Make: classic, Paper Inventions. This new edition ignites imagination with hours of hands-on STEAM activities for young inventors and busy adults. 

In this fireside chat, I’ll get to talk about her creative process behind the more than 30 fun projects and variations in this book, from traditional decorative pastimes, amazing math oddities, and daring feats of construction to light-up, motorized, and programmable paper circuits. I’ll also be bringing several of her favorite paper inventions, demonstrating how they fold, pop, spin, glow, and even compute!

Joining the panel are the inspirational Jie Qi, co-founder and CEO of Chibitronics, and Angii De La Cruz, lead instructor at the Thinqubator, the children's makerspace at the Tech Valley Center of Gravity in Troy, NY, who hosted the Paper Inventions book launch event for families.

An automaton is a mechanical figure that moves when you turn a crank. In this workshop you’ll build your own automaton out of paper and adjust the paper mechanism to make it move the way you want. On Monday, April 8, 2024, people in our area and across North America will get to experience the wonder of a solar eclipse. In this workshop with STEAM author Kathy Ceceri, kids and teens learn how an eclipse occurs, find out what to expect when it happens, and then make their own light-up eclipse simulation.

Younger kids can make a Light-up Corona that glows when you squeeze the moon. Older kids and teens can create a Moon Slider Switch to turn on the corona’s light show at the moment of totality.

I’ll be back at Rochester Maker Faire this year, making my Paper Robot Fin Gripper Claws! Learn how to make a robotic gripper from paper that shapes itself around any object! It's one of the projects from my most recent book, Making Simple Robots 2nd Edition. For ages 8-11, spaces are limited.
